What it shows

Sortable table: council name, total expenditure, capital works spend, rates revenue, governance spend ratio, population served.

How to read it

The most useful single field is governance spend as a percentage of total expenditure. A high ratio means more money is being consumed by corporate/admin overhead and less is reaching frontline services.

Rates revenue alone is not a judgement; rural councils run legitimately higher per-capita spend because of asset footprint.

Data sources

  • VLGGC questionnaires (9 years)
  • LGPRF indicators (22,776 per reporting period)

Caveats

  • Council financial categories are self-reported and occasionally restated.
  • Small councils have more missing fields than metro councils.
  • Some councils disclose capital works quarterly; others annually.
